The great university of jazz
There are a handful of bandleaders who launched massive careers for the people who played in them.
One of these bands was Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
Only Miles Davis matched his "school's" output and, of course, Miles had the advantage of 'discovering' some of Blakey's discoveries.
Bio notes:
October 11, 1919 – October 16, 1990
One of the pre-eminent bop drummers, Blakey led the hard bop movement of the 50s and 60s.
His band was "in business" for over 30 years, a remarkable accomplishment for any jazz group.
Later in his life, Blakey adopted the Muslim name Abdullah Ibn Buhaina and was affectionately called "Bu" by friends.
