The famous Miles Davis studio recording

"Someday My Prince Will Come" was composed in 1937 for the Walt Disney animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Although it was recorded by a couple of British dance bands that year, the first jazz version was by singer Ruth Price in 1951.

In 1955 it was recorded by pianist John Williams, it caught on after the Dave Brubeck Quartet played it 1957, and it was also recorded in 1959 by both Donald Byrd and the Bill Evans Trio.

However the most famous jazz version was made on Mar. 20, 1961 by the Miles Davis Quintet with a surprise guest.

After a muted Miles, tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley and pianist Wynton Kelly take solos, Davis begins the closing melody statement and then stops, letting a visiting John Coltrane take a few choruses.

Other than recording “Teo” the following day, this was the final recording of Miles Davis and John Coltrane together, and it is a bit of a classic.

Personnel:

Miles Davis, trumpet
Hank Mobley, tenor
John Coltrane, tenor
Wynton Kelly, piano
Paul Chambers, bass
Jimmy Cobb, drums

- Scott Yanow
