Modern Jazz Quartet performs a set on the BBC television show Jazz Session.

Personnel:

John Lewis - piano
Milt Jackson - vibraphone
Percy Heath - bass
Conny Kay - drums

Modern Jazz Quartet began as the side project of four of Dizzy Gillespie's big band members: John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, and Kenny Clarke.

The group changed its name to "Modern Jazz Quartet" in 1952 and replaced Ray Brown with Percy Heath. The final lineup change occurred in 1955, when Conny Kay replaced Clarke on the drums.

MJQ played a unique fusion of bebop, cool jazz, and classical until their final record in 1993.
