In the 1800s and early 1900s there were three music super powers in the Western Hemisphere: New York, New Orleans - and Havana, Cuba.

In fact, in some categories Havana was #1.

Communication, trade, travel and cross pollination between New Orleans and Havana was especially rich.

Then came the trade embargo...and we forgot our history.

It's all explained here by musicologist Ned Sublette author of "Cuba and Its Music" and "The World That Made New Orleans."
