The alto plays beautifully at the 1975 Monterey Jazz Festival

Altoist Paul Desmond (1924-77) sounded like no one else, with a tone lighter than air that perfectly fit his thoughtful solos.
While famous for his extensive work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet (which largely ended in 1967 other than a few later reunions), Desmond also led a fine group during his last years, a quartet with guitarist Ed Bickert, bassist Don Thompson and drummer Jerry Fuller.
He caresses Johnny Mandel’s “Emily” during this performance from the 1975 Monterey Jazz Festival as only he could.
