Pianist Raphael Homer "Ray" Bryant was born December 24, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Bryant began playing piano at age six.
In 1953 he became the house piano player for Blue Note Club in Philadelphia. There he played with Lester Young, Miles Davis, and Sonny Rollins.
In the 1950s, Bryant toured and recorded as a soloist and trio leader.
Ray Bryant performs a solo piano set at the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. This performance comprised his LP Alone at Montreux, released on Atlantic Records that same year.
As the house pianist at Philadelphia's Blue Note jazz club in the mid-'50s, Bryant accompanied Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and other jazz legends. He continued playing as a soloist and trio leader until the 2000s.
