A short but fun trumpet battle from four of the greats

At the 1958 Cannes Jazz Festival, four major trumpeters get a chance to trade off on “Just You, Just Me.”

The film clip starts halfway through the song, with Bill Coleman (who offers solid swing) and Dizzy Gillespie taking colorful solos.

All four trumpeters (Coleman, Dizzy, Teddy Buckner and Roy Eldridge) have an opportunity to trade off with Gillespie sounding the most competitive.

Interestingly enough, three of the trumpeters (all but Buckner) were featured at different times as the soloist with Teddy Hill’s orchestra during the 1930s.

Personnel:

Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet
Roy Eldridge, trumpet
Teddy Buckner, trumpet
Bill Coleman, trumpet
Martial Solal, piano
Arvell Shaw, bass
J.C. Heard, drums

- Scott Yanow
