The altoist takes a memorable solo in 1965
In 1965, altoist Sonny Stitt was part of a European tour with a Charlie Parker tribute sextet that also included pianist Walter Bishop, Jr, bassist Tommy Potter, drummer Kenny Clarke, trumpeter Howard McGhee and trombonist J.J. Johnson.
This quartet version of “Lover Man” (different than the documented one from a German concert) puts the spotlight on Stitt, whose double time lines, witty song quotes, beautiful tone and mastery of the bebop vocabulary are very much on display.
Personnel:
Sonny Stitt, alto
Walter Bishop, Jr., piano
Tommy Potter, bass
Kenny Clarke, drums
-Scott Yanow
