Stan Getz, one of the great tenor-saxophonists of all time, had an episodic career most notable for his beautiful tone and some unexpected twists and turns.
Quite unexpected was Getz’s great success helping to introduce and popularize bossa-nova in the early-to-mid 1960s with “Desafinado” and “The Girl From Ipanema.”
However Getz was a bit embarrassed by his commercial success, formed a pianoless quartet with vibraphonist Gary Burton, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Roy Haynes, and played more heated jazz when he was not called upon to perform his hits.
From 1966, Getz and his quartet (with a virtuosic solo from Burton and short spots from Swallow and Haynes) perform Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From The Apple” during a television appearance from London.
