Art Ford's Jazz Party, 1958
Osie Johnson (1923-66) was a very busy drummer during his short life, performing on many studio sessions and often with swing era all-stars.
After host Art Ford talks a little about Johnson, a ten-piece group filled with historic jazz legends jams on “Stompin' At The Savoy.”
Tenor-saxophonist Georgie Auld, trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Urbie Green, vibraphonist Harry Sheppard, clarinetist Buster Bailey, violinist Stuff Smith, pianist Johnny Guarnieri and trumpeter Roy Eldridge take a chorus apiece, leading to Osie Johnson’s extended solo and the closing riff melody.
Plenty of fireworks are to be heard throughout this joyful jam session.
