An uptempo and swinging version of a Billy Strayhorn standard
One of the great bop-oriented pianists of the 1950s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, Tommy Flanagan (1930-2001) could always be relied upon to play sparkling solos that swung hard while also showing sensitivity.
After many years working as an accompanist to Ella Fitzgerald, he had a career resurgence starting in the mid-1970s that found him leading a succession of excellent trios.
This stirring rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s “Raincheck,” filmed in France in 1991, has Flanagan taking an exciting solo, bassist George Mraz creating a melodic improvisation, and drummer Bobby Durham making the most of his tradeoffs with the pianist.
Personnel:
Tommy Flanagan, piano
George Mraz, bass
Bobby Durham, drums
