Composed by Benny Golson, �Blues March� was first recorded by Blue Mitchell for his 1958 album �Bix Six.� Within that year �Blues March� would be picked up by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for their album �Moanin.�
Benny Golson conceived of this work to be played as if one were a member of an American Legion band. It would become a staple of the Messengers' set.
