The original version of Wayne Shorter's most famous composition
Wayne Shorter was 32 in 1966 when he wrote and recorded his most famous original, “Footprints.”
Already an alumnus of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1959-64), a leader on the Blue Note label, and a member of the Miles Davis Quintet for over a year, Shorter recorded “Footprints” on Feb. 24, 1966 as part of his Adam’s Apple album.
Miles Davis liked the song and recorded it with Shorter on his Miles Smiles album on Oct. 25, 1966, a famous rendition that made it a jazz standard.
The debut version of the augmented blues has top-notch solos from the distinctive Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Reggie Workman.
Personnel:
Wayne Shorter, tenor
Herbie Hancock, piano
Reggie Workman, bass
Joe Chambers, drums
- Scott Yanow
