During its life, Weather Report went through several different phases.
The original working group, which was formed in 1971, featured keyboardist Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter on tenor and soprano, bassist Miroslav Vitous, drummer Alphonse Mouzon, and percussionist Dom Um Romeo (although Airto Moreira was on their first record).
Long before “Birdland” and Jaco Pastorius, this version of Weather Report, which some would say had the most creative and adventurous lineup, was blazing new paths in the young fusion movement.
Less groove-oriented than they would become, Weather Report began its existence by creating ensemble-based music where everyone and no one soloed together.
This 22 minute performance from 1971 is quite fascinating and colorful.
