Growing up on a rice plantation just outside of New Orleans in Wallace, Louisiana, ‘Cousin Joe’ (born Pleasant Joseph) attended the local Baptist Church where he first developed his singing abilities.
During the 1920s he progressed from street performer to booking gigs in popular local clubs accompanying himself on piano. Over the course of his career Cousin Joe associated with a number of music legends including Sidney Bechet, Cab Calloway, and Billie Holiday.
