Earl Hooker

American Folk Blues Fest ’69

Earl Hooker (guitar) performs on the 1969 “American Folk Blues Festival” tour, featuring Mack Thompson (bass), and Robert St Judy (drums).

After spending years touring playing in small clubs Earl Hooker exploded onto the college circuit in the late ’60s. He recorded extensively in California with his cousin John Lee Hooker and attended the 1969 Chicago Blues Festival upon his return. In October of that year he joined the American Folk Blues Festival tour in Europe where he played twenty concerts over the course of twenty-three days in nine countries. Well received by audiences Earl held this time in high regard as the pinnacle of his career. The rigorous touring schedule had a disastrous effect on his health and was hospitalized after playing a few club dates with Junior Wells. After a life long battle with tuberculosis Earl died on April 21, 1970 at age 41.
