John Littlejohn

Blues underground

John Littlejohn (guitar & vocals) performs live with his band in the late ’70s.

Leaving Mississippi in his mid-teens John Funchess (later to be known as John Littlejohn) rambled the delta and traveled as far as Rochester, New York before settling in Gary, Indiana in 1951. He was a constant presence in Chicago area clubs from the ’50s until the mid-1980s when illness forced him into retirement. The rising popularity of disco and R&B didn’t avert John from continuing the blues tradition at a point when many bands crossed over.
