Meet Me In The Bottom (What is the Blues?)

Howlin’ Wolf

The Wolf Speaks Out

Howlin’ Wolf verbalizes the true meaning of the blues at the expense of the legendary Son House at the 1966 Newport Folk Festival.

Alan Lomax persuaded the Newport Folk Festival Board to allow him to film the event in 1966. Many renowned folk musicians, some in their retirement, were sought out and invited. Lomax’s efforts captured stage performances as well as those taking place in a simulated juke joint, an improvised performance space that he created. There the artists could feel at ease to speak their minds and let the music flow.
