The Dirty Dozen
Rufus “Speckled Red” Perryman
“Speckled Red”
This record was made in Memphis, Tennessee at the Peabody Hotel on September 22, 1929 featuring Rufus “Speckled Red” Perryman (piano & vocals).
Rufus “Speckled Red” Perryman, not to be confused with his brother William “Piano Red” Perryman, is the elder of the two albino pianists. Though he was born in Monroe, Louisiana his family moved around a lot when he was growing up and he also lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Detroit, Michigan. He left Detroit in 1929 bound for Memphis where he was located by a Brunswick recording unit a short time later. The subsequent session held at the Peabody Hotel produced two sides, one of them an insult song “The Dirty Dozen” would become Speckled Red’s most notable record.
