Mississippi John Hurt (guitar & vocals) performs a spiritual in 1965 as a featured guest on the folk music TV series “Rainbow Quest” hosted by Pete Seeger and his wife Toshi.

The blues structure first appeared in early negro spirituals such as “Roll Jordan Roll.” John Hurt like most other country bluesmen at the time possessed a repertoire which contained religious songs. These church songs were often the first music they learned.
