A tasteful and lightly swinging treatment of the standard

Pianist Kenny Barron has had a long career that includes recordings with his brother tenor-saxophonist Bill Barron, membership in the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet o the 1960s, notable associations with Stan Getz and the group Sphere, and nearly 50 recordings as a leader.

Barron has been so consistent for so long that his continual excellence has often been taken for granted but, make no mistake about it, he is one of the greats.

On this performance, probably from the early 1990s, the pianist performs “Autumn Leaves” with Bob Cranshaw (making a rare appearance on acoustic rather than electric bass) and drummer Alan Dawson.

As usual, Kenny Barron plays flawlessly and is full of inventive and tasteful ideas.
