Annie Ross (1930-2020) was one of the finest of all vocalese singers.
Vocalese is the art of creating a song with lyrics out of a recorded solo.
Ross had her greatest success with “Twisted” (based on a Wardell Gray solo) and became famous for her singing with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross during 1957-62.
After leaving the group, she settled in England and worked as both an actress and a singer.
Annie Ross’ second most famous song was “Farmer’s Market” which had her singing her lyrics to the solos of a quintet that included tenor-saxophonist Wardell Gray and trumpeter Art Farmer.
She is heard in peak form on this version from 1964 on which she is accompanied by the Tony Kinsey Quartet.
