When he emerged in the early-to-mid 1970s, Warren Vache became the first new major swing cornetist in quite some time; unlike his contemporaries, he preferred to play early prebop jazz.
While he has expanded his repertoire during the nearly half-century since (and can play bebop with the best), Vache still remains one of the top swing-oriented players on the scene.
This television clip from the Peter Appleyard Show in 1977 features the 26-year old Vache matching wits with vibraphonist Appleyard during a happy version of “After You’ve Gone,” showing that he was already a confident and powerful soloist.
