Tenor-saxophonist Pharoah Sanders originally came to fame for his very passionate and intense playing with the John Coltrane Quintet during 1965-67 where his sound explorations took as its starting point where Coltrane’s solos ended.
After Coltrane’s death, Sanders went out on his own and had a surprising hit with “The Creator Has A Master Plan” in 1970, recording a series of stirring albums for the Impulse label.
Sanders always had a contrasting mellow side as can be heard on this relatively straight ahead outing from 1968.
Joined by pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Sirone, and drummer Majeed Shabazz, Sanders plays an unidentified original that includes fine piano and bass solos; unfortunately it ends just as the band was going into “The Creator Has A Master Plan” which predates the famous recording.
