At the 1989 Kongsberg Jazz Festival, four world class local players (tenor-saxophonist Knut Riisnaes, pianist Niels Lan Doky, bassist Arild Anderson, and drummer Alex Riel) welcomed two American greats: tenors Jimmy Heath and David Murray.
On Sonny Rollins’ medium-tempo blues “Tenor Madness,” the three saxophonists all have their chance to make statements.
Riisnaes is excellent, Heath (while essentially a bebopper) showed that he was a contemporary of John Coltrane, and Murray (after a relatively mellow start) blows the roof off with his upper register explorations.
