One of the first improvising jazz string quartets, the Turtle Island String Quartet was formed in 1985 and has since combined jazz with classical music, World music, and pop songs.
The group has changed personnel along the way; the 2008 version seen in this clip consists of violinists Mads Tolling and David Balakrishhan, Jeremy Kittel on viola, and cellist Mark Summer.
The Turtle Island String Quartet performs an ensemble-oriented version of “My Favorite Things” that is much closer to John Coltrane’s rendition than to Julie Andrews’.
