Don Ellis (1934-78) was a very original trumpeter, bandleader, and musical thinker.
His big bands became famous for their mastery of unusual time signatures (even playing in 17/4 and 31/4 time), their use of electronics, and their colorful unpredictability.
Ellis and his oversized orchestra (which had an enlarged rhythm section) appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 and played a shortened version of his “Concerto For Trumpet” with its energetic leader in the spotlight.
