Jason Moran

A thoughtful reinvention of the standard

Pianist Jason Moran has been creating music full of innovative ideas and surprises ever since he joined Greg Osby in 1997, soon putting together his own groups.

The piano that he plays at this 2011 solo performance is not in the best shape, but Moran overcomes its deficiencies to create a rather original statement on the veteran standard “Body And Soul.”

As is often true of his work with his trio Bandwagon, sometimes Moran lingers on a chord pattern from the song, repeating that segment until it is fully explored, and then he moves on to other parts of the piece.

The result is a melancholy and thoughtful interpretation that sounds a bit different than the thousands of other versions of “Body and Soul” that have been recorded since the late 1920s.
