Dexter Gordon had a long and episodic career filled with highs, a few lows, and great music.
After spending time off the scene in the 1950s, Gordon made a major comeback in the early 1960s, recording a series of gems for the Blue Note label.
He moved to Europe in late-1962, staying for 13 years and playing at the peak of his powers during that fertile period.
This performance of Tadd Dameron’s “Lady Bird” from 1964 features the 41-year old tenor-saxophonist at a performance in Belgium leading a quartet with pianist George Gruntz, bassist Guy Pedersen and drummer Daniel Humair.
This is Dexter Gordon at his best.
