There were many assets to the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band such as the writing of Boland, the twin drums of Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare, and the outstanding brass section.
“Sax No End,” an uptempo piece by Boland that is based on the chord changes of “Chinatown, My Chinatown,” gives all five saxophonists an opportunity to shine.
This 1968 television performance has solos by Johnny Griffin, Tony Coe and Ronnie Scott on tenors, baritonist Sahib Shihab, and altoist Derek Humble along with some outstanding writing for the saxophone section.
