When he was twenty trumpeter Freddie Hubbard left Indianapolis and moved to New York.
There he had the opportunity to play with some of the best jazz musician of era including Sonny Rollins, Philly Joe Jones, Eric Dolphy, and J. J. Johnson and was invited to appear on Ornette Coleman’s 1960 album “Free Jazz.”
Freddie cut his first album as leader “Open Sesame” during June 1960 followed in August 1961 by his famous release “Ready for Freddie.”
Hubbard played on “Olé Coltrane”, John Coltrane’s final Atlantic records session and continued to appear as a side man on some of the most important jazz records though the 1960s.
The early 1970s produced the most prolific albums of his career including “First Light” which won a Grammy Award in 1972.
Freddie Hubbard plays a solo live at the 1986 Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival.
