Tenor saxophonist, Charlie Rouse began his career in 1944 with the “Billy Eckstine Orchestra” followed by Dizzy Gillespie and finished out the decade with the Duke Ellington.
Charlie made his first appearance on recordings in 1947 with Tadd Dameron.
During the 1950s he contained to play extensively in bands of artists including Count Basie, Oscar Pettiford and Bull Moose Jackson.
His prior endeavors aside, it was as member of the “Thelonious Monk Quintet” that Charlie Rouse is best remembered.
He remained with the group for 1960-1970 and organized the tribute band “Sphere” following Monk’s death.
From Charlie Rouse’s 1988 album “Epistrophy”, this performance was recorded live in San Francisco on October 10, 1988 at Bimbo’s 365 Club.
