Terence Blanchard has been a major trumpeter and composer since the mid-1980s, and he has long enjoyed interpreting Wayne Shorter songs.
Of all of Shorter’s originals, “Footprints” (first recorded in the mid-1960s) is the most famous and widely recorded.
This version has the trumpeter joined at the 2003 Newport Jazz Festival by tenor-saxophonist Brice Winston, pianist Aaron Parks, guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist Brice Winston, and drummer Rodney Green.
The polyrhythms and the comping of Parks (19 at the time) help give Blanchard’s rendition of “Footprints’ a fresh spin.
