“Nothing but sound”

Ornette Coleman was born on March 9, 1930, in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was renowned worldwide as a composer, a teacher, a band leader, and a performer and is widely considered one of the most important musicians who ever played the music we call “jazz.”

This interview took place towards the end of his life, but he discussed these same themes from the very earliest days of his career.

To Ornette, music transcended time, style, race, history, and all other considerations.

It was nothing more – or less – than the art of sound.
