Three Songs – 1963
Count Basie
A well-rounded mini-set by Basie and his orchestra
The Count Basie Orchestra has been a swinging institution since it was founded in 1935.
Other than the 1950-51 period when Basie led a small group, his big band has been a nonstop musical force for nearly 90 years.
From 1963, the Count Basie Orchestra performs three songs: “Swinging Shepherd Blues” (with Frank Wess and Eric Dixon on flute), a roaring version of “Jumpin’ At The Woodside” (featuring Frank Foster on tenor), and “Ol’ Man River” which is a showcase for drummer Sonny Payne who includes some fancy juggling of his drum sticks.
