Joe Henderson (1937-2001), Bob Berg (1951-2002), and Joe Farrell (1937-86) were teamed together at the 1985 Madrid Jazz Festival for a tenor summit.
While Henderson and Farrell occasionally crossed paths, neither one ever had the opportunity to record with Berg.
The three tenors play a melody by another major saxophonist (Sonny Rollins) during their uptempo version of “Tenor Madness.”
Henderson, Berg and Farrell (with backing by pianist George Cables, drummer Louis Hayes, and an unidentified bassist) take muscular solos and trade fours during this burning performance.
