A classical piece – 2011
Doc Severinsen and Arturo Sandoval
Two masterful trumpeters play together
Doc Severinsen became famous for leading the Tonight Show band on the Johnny Carson Show for many years, but before that he was a top studio player whose range and musicianship were always very highly rated.
Even before he left Cuba for a notable career in the U.S, Arturo Sandoval was considered one of the world’s greatest jazz trumpeters.
In 2011 at a festival honoring the Mexican virtuoso trumpeter Rafael Mendez, Severinsen is featured on a classical work, welcoming Sandoval to its middle section.
Their tradeoff, which is full of fireworks along with a display of their mutual respect, is memorable; Severinsen was 83 at the time.
