Milt Hinton Day

June 23, 1910 – December 19, 2000

“Old Man Time”

Bassist Milton John “Milt” Hinton was born on June 23, 1910 in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

At 11, his family moved to Chicago where he received training on violin, bass horn, tuba, cello, and the double bass.

In Chicago as a young man, he played with Jabbo Smith, Eddie South, and Art Tatum. In 1936, he joined Cab Calloway.

He was a much in demand studio player, an energetic educator, and a fine photographer too. I love this piece “Old Man Time” which was one of his favorites.

Milt Hinton was a double bassist who lived to see most of the 20th century. He would collaborate with Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Ben Webster and Art Tatum.

Nickname “The Judge” – well earned.
