Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-94) can be considered the last of the great American Songbook composers even though, unlike the others (Gershwin, Porter, Arlen, Berlin, etc.), he was from Brazil and practically founded a new type of music, bossa-nova.
Jobim was honored at a 1993 concert and had an opportunity to play piano with some other notable musicians.
On “Wave,” he is joined by his son Paul Jobim and Oscar Castro Neves on guitars, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Harvey Mason, percussionist Alex Acuna, and Herbie Hancock.
Hancock at first plays electric piano in the background while Jobim brings in the song, and then he joins the composer on piano, creating a pretty fluent one-handed solo that makrd Jobim smile.
