While most jazz magazines tend to emphasize the cutting-edge and most innovative music of their time, many musicians also enjoy playing creatively in older styles of jazz.
Small-group swing, Dixieland and mainstream jazz have each had active underground movements since the 1950s, delighting audiences who are not necessarily interested in sound explorations and new music.
Trombonist Dan Barrett has been a major player since the 1980s, performing at classic jazz festivals and jazz parties for decades.
He leads an all-star group that includes trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, clarinetist Evan Christopher, pianist Rossano Sportiello, bassist Sam Rocha and drummer Josh Collazo through a 1920s classic, “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone.”
Each of the horn players gets a two-chorus solo with the other horns riffing during the second choruses; Christopher hints a bit tonewise at Edmond Hall.
There is also a fine solo by Sportiello and drum breaks from Collazo before the band closes the tune with two happy ensemble choruses.
