Ever since he began recording as a leader in 2014, James Brandon Lewis has been gradually gaining recognition as one of the top tenor saxophonists in modern jazz.
His background was in gospel music, he has a full knowledge of his historical predecessors on tenor, and Lewis has developed his own sound and style which looks simultaneously at the past and the future.
At a 2024 concert, Lewis and his trio with bassist Josh Werner and drummer Chad Edward Taylor performed “Left Alone,” a haunting melody co-written by Mal Waldron and Billie Holiday.
Lewis keeps the melody in mind during his solo, features bassist Werner a bit, and gradually fades out during the final chorus.
