One of the great tenor-saxophonists of all time, Stan Getz (1927-91) had an absolutely beautiful tone, a mastery of bop and swing, and was open-minded enough to explore several areas of jazz including providing the definitive sound for bossa-nova.
By 1989, he had been at it for 45 years and was still relatively healthy, just two years before his passing.
Joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Yasuhito Mori, and drummer Ben Riley, he races effortlessly through Cole Porter’s “I Love You,” playing chorus after chorus of inventive ideas in his luscious tone.
Barron also takes an exciting solo and Getz’s tradeoff of two-bar phrases with Riley is quite impressive.
