At the end of a concert at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena in 1994, clarinetist Ken Peplowski and his group with guitarist Howard Alden, pianist Ben Aronov, bassist Murray Wall, and drummer Tom Melito welcomed trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison for a relaxed version of “Exactly Like You.”
Edison, who had an immediately distinctive sound and was a master at placing fairly simple phrases in the best possible spots, takes a typically colorful solo.
Peplowski’s choruses are filled with rapid double-time phrases, Aranov has a short solo, and Alden trades off with bassist Wall before the piece makes its way to a happy conclusion.
