Stephane Grappelli (1908-97) was one of the greatest jazz violinists of all time, playing a half-century of rewarding music around the world after his period with Django Reinhardt in the 1930s ended.

Michel Legrand (1932-2019) was not only a superb composer and arranger but also a very good jazz pianist.

The two brilliant French musicians teamed up for recordings in 1992 and 1995 with a large orchestra, but their performance of “How High The Moon” from 1984 is with a quartet.

While the violinist is mostly in the spotlight, Legrand’s one solo chorus and his interplay with Grappelli during the second half of the performance add greatly to the excitement of this rare encounter.
