While the recordings of Freddy Martin are generally of little interest to jazz fans since they tended to be sweet ballads, he did record one classic instrumental.

On “Bumble Boogie” in 1946, pianist Jack Fina turned “The Flight Of The Bumble Bee” into a memorable boogie-woogie romp that in the swing era lingo would have been called a “killer diller.”

Due to that number’s popularity, Fina soon formed his own successful band.

Jack Fina was enlisted for the 1946 film It’s Great To Be Young to play “Bumble Boogie” as a piano solo, making it possible for one not only to hear but to see him playing his hit.
