Ella Fitzgerald was always acclaimed for her scat-singing and swinging abilities but was sometimes criticized by those who should have known better for not being a great interpreter of ballads.
While she often sounded quite happy to be singing, Ella was capable of digging deep into the lyrics of a ballad when the words meant something to her.
Her voice is powerful and quite expressive on her rendition of the ballad “My Last Affair” which she performs with an unseen orchestra on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
