The electric bass innovator followed up his important stint with Weather Report by forming his Word Of Mouth Orchestra which was active for a couple years in the 1980s.

At a concert in Montreal in 1982, he led his Word Of Mouth sextet, an all-star group consisting of trumpeter Randy Brecker, tenor-saxophonist Bob Mintzer, drummer Peter Erskine, percussionist Don Alias, and Othello Molineaux on steel drums

On a version of the bassist’s rhythmically quirky “Mr. Phone Bone,” Bob Mintzer takes a long solo in a style reminiscent of Michael Brecker but in his own voice.

Brecker and Pastorius also have solos, Othello’s steel drums add color ,and the group is driven by Erskine and Alias.

Kudos are deserved by the Jazz Video Guy (Bret Primack) who made this rare clip available.
