Throughout his long career, vibraphonist Gary Burton featured many up-and-coming guitarists in his quartet including Larry Coryell, Jerry Hahn, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield.
One of the last to be in Burton’s quartet before the vibraphonist retired was the brilliant Julian Lage.
At the time of this version of “Afro Blue,” Burton was 70 and Lage was 25 but there is certainly no age gap in their playing.
With bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez completing the quartet, Burton and Lage are well featured during an often-stirring version of the Mongo Santamaria standard.
