Singer Anna Marie Wooldridge a Chicago born singer who later relocated to New York where she frequented the Blue Note jazz club, adopting the stage name Abbey Lincoln.
Influenced by Billie Holiday she recorded “Abbey Lincoln’s Affair – A Story of a Girl in Love” in 1956 followed by three consecutive LP releases on Riverside Records.
She went on to appear on Max Roach’s landmark civil rights-themed recording, “We Insist!” (1960) establishing herself as a voice for the civil rights movement.
Abbey married Max Roach in 1962 remaining together until 1970 and performed in collaboration with his daughter from a previous marriage Maxine playing viola.
Her artistic output that had slowed considerably during the 1980s picked up in the ’90s with the release of eight albums featuring Pat Metheny, Bobby Hutcherson, Jackie McLean, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, Hank Jones, Max Roach, and Charlie Haden.
In 2007 Abbey Lincoln released her final album “Abbey Sings Abbey” and passed away three years later in a Manhattan nursing home at age eighty.
Abbey Lincoln is featured with Max Roach on Belgian TV in January 1964.
