The Pat Metheny Group with keyboardist Lyle Mays was one of the most popular of all modern jazz groups during 1977-2005.
The original version of the band, with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb, always recorded originals but live in concert they would occasionally stretch out on a standard.
This version of “All The Things You Are” from 1980 has Lyle taking an outstanding piano solo, Metheny tearing into the piece, and the group playing many fresh ideas during a heated performance that is much different than most of their atmospheric folk/jazz music of the era.
